Westward Expansion Websites Project UPDATE

Hi guys!

           I just finished grading the websites for the students that have turned in their rubrics. If you don't see a grade on edline, it means I don't have your rubric. 

         IF you see a 40 and below, please redo it to improve your grade. You have until Friday, March 7th to publish and improve your project.

         TURN IN your rubric so I can grade your website. If you haven't published your website, please do so as soon as possible and email me at mscaroyuen at gmail dot com, telling me you have done so.

         Any other questions or if you need help, email me or come see me during lunch on Monday or during Action Period Monday after school.

Honors: HD Revised Essay

IF I gave back your revised essay, please do the revisions suggested and highlight the changes on your revised essay.

If you gave me your revised essay today, I will look at this weekend and hand it back into you on Monday. Your homework will then be to revise it and hand it back in on Wednesday, please highlight the changes/revisions.

Periods 2, 4 & 6: Portfolio: Unit 6 - Early American Government (the booklet with Washington's face) needs to be signed by a parent and returned on Monday.

Honors - History Day Revised Essay & Reminders

Thank you to all who have turned in their revised essays and actually revised them.
To those who just turned in a reprint of your first rough draft, please try again and please take note of the comments on the papers you turned in originally and do the revisions suggested.
If you still haven't turned in an essay, step to it. 

Please double check your spelling and grammar. Please redo your in-text citations in MLA format.

For example, if the following quote was taken from a book I wrote, "I would simply put the author's last name of the source I got the quote from into parentheses as well as the page number." (Yuen 7)

If you are still unsure of how to cite your source, there are resources in your History Day folder. If you would like further help, please feel free to come see me to make an appointment to receive assistance on your History Day paper.

If you still haven't turned anything in, I suggest you come in to see me as soon as possible so you can get the help you need to bring your grade up. (History Day assignments are worth more than chapter notes or classwork so if you really need to bring your grade up from an F to a C, I suggest spending time on History Day assignments that you still need to turn in.)

Honors: Bring your HD essay on Wednesday, November 20th

Please bring your History Day essay to class in our classroom on Wednesday, even if you're not done with it. Just bring what you have.

We will be going over it and doing a peer edit session that day with the substitute.

Periods 5 & 7 - Invention Project Reminder

We are in the computer lab on Monday in W-305

AFTER you are done with your research you will write a 3 paragraph essay.

The essay should include background information about the inventor and invention and how it worked.

Most importantly, your essay should also include how it impacted the lives of the people in America when it was first invented.

Template of essay:

Paragraph 1 - Introduction about inventor
Paragraph 2 - Information about invention - use your research notes
Paragraph 3 - How invention impacted American life (when it was first invented) - use your research notes.

Honors: Invention Project Reminder

The 5 paragraph essay about your invention should be emailed to me by Monday morning.

The essay should include background information about the inventor and invention and how it worked.

Most importantly, your essay should also include how it impacted the lives of the people in America when it was first invented.

If you are able to, please "share" your Google Document with me via Google Drive, if not, an attachment in an email will work just as well.

Once you've sent me the email, check your email again for your score/grade or look out for comments on ways to improve your grade.

P.S. We will work on the poster on Monday so do not fret about it.

Create a 3 column chart of the 3 branches of government - Legislative, Executive & Judicial.

Use the reading, "Anatomy of the Constitution" to help you with the answers.

Constitutional Convention Essay - Write a 4 paragraph essay to describe the controversies and compromises at the Constitutional Convention.

Introduction - Why did the Founding Fathers meet after the Articles of Confederation was established? Why did they want to replace the Articles of Confederation? Explain the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation. 

1st Body - Describe the problems at the Constitutional Convention

* Representation - debate between the large and small states
* Slavery

You can also include the following controversies:
- trade
- taxes
- power of central government

2nd Body - Describe the solutions to the controversies/problems that happened at the Constitutional Convention.

Conclusion - summarize the above information and talk about the importance of the Constitutional Convention. 

Periods 2, 4, 6 - HW due Sept 18th

Take notes on Chapter 5 Section 1 and 2.

Section 1 - Answer questions 3-4 at the end of the section.

Section 2 - Define the following terms:

• Great Compromise
• Three-Fifths Compromise
• Federalism

Periods 2, 4, & 6 - HD Topic Due TODAY, Sept 11th

I checked on you during class to make sure you had your topic. IF you were absent, you need to email me or comment below with your topic.

Again, you need to try to narrow your topic. Find a specific event to focus on. Civil rights is great, but it's too broad. Find an event you can focus on, what are the rights of that event? What were the responsibilities?

Period 5 & 7 - Declaration of Independence

We learned about the basic ideas about government that are contained in the Declaration of Independence, the arguments found in the Declaration of Independence that justify the separation of the colonies from Great Britain and why some colonists did not want to separate from Great Britain.

We defined the following terms in your notebook:

• abolish
• Loyalists
• natural law
• Patriots
• self-evident
• Tories
• unalienable rights

The following questions were to be answered in your notebook and written in complete sentences. (Period 5 answered 1 & 2, Period 7 up to #3)

1. What were the reasons for writing the Declaration of Independence?

2. What are the four parts of the Declaration of Independence?

3. What arguments does the Declaration make in support of the colonies' independence?

4. What complaints did the colonists have against the king of Great Britain?

5. What is the purpose of government as described in the Declaration of Independence?

6. What does the Declaration of Independence say people have the right to do if a government does not protect their rights?

7. What do the following phrases from the Declaration mean?

• "all men are created equal"
• "consent of the governed"
• "self-evident"
• "unalienable rights"
